Last night was meant to be the last appearance of the Happy Singers youth choir under my direction.
We had a decent number of singers show up as we prepared to minister at a Christmas programme in the little town of Koudekerk. Our manager, a dear lady (from the Salvation Army) mostly arranges our gigs and this time, I got to discover right there that our audience was a 100 percent women group! It was some women association with average age of 50?? Nothing wrong except I´d prepared for songs that would have mostly appealed to a younger audience… Well, we got started with our soundcheck and they were already enjoying it. This would be good I thought. The first of the 4 segments where we came up to sing went ok.Then the second and disaster struck..Firstly, in the middle of the first song, our keyboardist seemed to have this glassy look (later found out, he had a mental blackout). Then there was this song Kirk Franklin´s Jesus is the Reason that we´d been working on for about a month and were all looking forward to. I played the backing track on the way to the venue in my car and was getting the girls in the car to sing along. Now it came to the pioint where we were to sing it. I even announced it.
The CD was nowhere to be found! Was not in the Player, not in the 2 bags I brought with me.. Had to switch over to another song. Then before the next segment, searched frantically, went back to the car, enlisted my daughter to check along with me, no success!
The singers wondered. Then our keyboardist said, he would just play it and I concurred. Braced myself, trusted God and sing it we did.the ladies were enjoying the Come on put your hands together bit and the singers were like angels… gloria. The ´jinx´was broken. By the time we sang the last segment, it was a revived atmosphere and I took a brave step and requested them to get off the chairs and stand with us as we sang ´You are good´ a la Israel houghton and it was an incredible sight, all the middle aged women and grandmas stood up sang, waved and swayed with us. I even heard later, that some climb up the chairs to sing and sway!!! What a picture. Our GOD is awesome. I thank him for the last hurrah and look forward to next year.
